Show m "Fine Cooperation" Reported On WPA Canning Project j ivirs. Margie Dalton, director of WPA canning projects of Washington Wash-ington county reports better cooperation co-operation than ever in the 1938 program of canning fruits and vegetables for the nursery school and WPA school lunches. Three centers are operating at top speed in the county, states Mrs. Dalton, one each in St. George, Hurricane and Enterprise, with five, three and one employees respectively. Already they have stored asparagus, aspara-gus, peas, corn and tomatoes, and are counting on shipments of peas from the north and on plenty more corn from the late crops locally. Six hundred quarts of tomatoes are on the shelves at the St. George unit, and more going up each day. Also, hundreds of quarts of Elberta peaches will be canned, as well as other fruits as they come on. Sponsored by the P.-T.A. the school lunch program is finding much favor. People who have produce pro-duce to contribute for the canning (Continued on page eight) WPA Canning Project (Continued from first page) receive in exchange the 2 cent lunch tickets which may be used during the school term to purchase the lunch provided. This amount is merely the charge for the soup serving, but other items are included. in-cluded. Along with preparing these canned fruits and vegetables for the purposes mentioned, the canning can-ning center is open for the use of women of the county, certified under the WPA, and for all clients eligible under authorization of the county welfare board. The equipment equip-ment available makes the canning problem easier. This feature is being appreciated by many of the women in each of these communities, com-munities, states Mrs. Dalton. The hope for the near future is to have each community that can make use of it. prosified with a canning and school lunch center, says the director, stating further that the local P.-T.A. is using its energy towards putting this program pro-gram over in other communities. Again. Mrs. Dalton urges those eligible, who desire this service, to take advantage of it, and those who have produce to contribute, j to bring it in or notify those in charge and it will lw gratefully accepted. |
