Show Need For Control of Noxious Veeds Told By Weed Control Director 3Ir. llobson Told of Damage Being Done By Weed In Utah and Suggested Control Methods "No people have ever survived more than 125 years in an' irrigated irri-gated section due to the fact that noxious weeds have got the best of them." This statement was made by George L. Hobson, ' who 'I in charge of the weed control (ftWram in this state, before a '(fiWtonlled together last night toVcnsiuV the weed program in MiUHotison gave the review of the tA-ogram which had been form-u'Aw form-u'Aw by the correlative commit-tAj commit-tAj of the extension service, ex-ijn-iment station, state agronomist, "tah State Farm bureau. Utah State board of agriculture, and the State Crop improvement association. associ-ation. In the last legislation an appropriation of $100,000 was granted for the next two years to control noxious weeds in the state. $00,000 of that will be spent during dur-ing the year 1937 and the other $50,000 of that will be spent during dur-ing the year 193S. Mr. Hobson stated that counties would have to set up an appropriation so as to take advantage of that which the state had set up. He told of the amount of damage dam-age which the weeds were doing in Utah the past year and how. rapidly rap-idly they had spread and showed the necessity of work that would have to be done immediately or it may be acting too late. He quoted from Director William Wil-liam Peterson who had stated that in the history of the world, no people ' have ever survived more than one hundred and twenty-five years in an irrigated section due to the fact that noxious weeds and insects have got the best of them. He stated that in most of the communities of Utah people have lived about one-half that time and that the weeds are getting a definite defin-ite inroad and if isn't started immediately im-mediately that it may be too late to head off the menace which this pest is giving. tie suggested a method which might be used in this county, similar sim-ilar to methods being used in other counties, is that a definite amount be levied in the taxes for the control con-trol of weeds so that equipment might be purchased for cleaning up the the weeds at less expense than what the individual land-owner and farmer can clean them up for. He showed how Weber and Boxelder counties had set aside a definite amount and the county is doing the work to control those weeds. He stated that in some sections of these localities one hundred per cent control was received re-ceived last year and the year before. Mr. Hobson states that the only way that it can be done effectively is take out the ditches and fence lines where this weed is infested so that clean cultivation can be used in all section. Part of this money which has been appropriated appropri-ated has been turned over to the Utah State experiment station and they are at the present time running run-ning experiments on different plots in practically all of the counties of the state.. Their purpose is to try out different chemicals which have been rated as very effective for control of noxious weeds. Before they recommend the chemical too highly they should like to do a (Continued on page eight) Noxious Weed Program (Continued from first page) little more work with it. This weed problem is serious and all of us will have to become weed-conscious before much headway head-way is made. It is particularly serious in this county where we raise a great deal sugar beet seed and ship it into other sections where thev might be free of these pests. If we get noxious weeds started in our own beet fields, it will ruin our industry because no one will care to purchase this if we are infested with this pest", Anson B. Call, county agent observed. |
