Show Maw Opens Gubernatorial Campaign For St. George Monday Nite Dr. Herbert B. Maw opened the gubernatorial campaign in St. George Monday evening .whem-he. addressed a packed house at the Wadsworth theatre on specific needs of the state of governmental department. Preceded in his address by Commissioner Newell R. Frei, and his campaign manager, Gordon T. Hyde, introduced by Mr. Frei, Mr. Maw made' earnest appeal to the citizens to weigh Utah's problems with respect to the people at large and not to the few. He advocated ad-vocated just and liberal distribution distribu-tion of state monies throughout the state to the various business concerns which he holds are entitled en-titled to a portion of the various funds expended. He feels that all of the printers of the state should share proportionately in the vast expenditure for this department. He suggests that state motor vehicles and other equipment should not be purchased from a few large concerns, but that this fund also be distributed to dealers throughout the state; that a few big road building and other high-powered high-powered operators should not be given the paying contracts on all of the big projects, but that the people of the districts served should have the right to local employment, that the funds so pvnpnrtpd mflv hpln to raise the standards of living throughout the state, instead of merely increasing in-creasing the wealth of the already al-ready rich. Deploring the 20 per cent cut made on the old age pensions, due to the reading of the law as it stands today, he urged that this unit should be so setup, and indicated by actual figures that it could be done, so that those who are entitled to this assistance would not be cut to supply the cost of administration of the fund. In his belief the home owner is entitled to greater consideration in the tax adjustments, wherein the home of the people will not be endangered because of lean years when he is unable to pay the tax, thus burdening the state with property and with increased relief rolls. Frequent applauding indicated the favor with which Doctor Maw's platform planks fitted into the desires of the people, and the program of state government which he outlined would, if in operation, go far to adjusting present conditions, it is stated. He recommended that state funds should sponsor the development de-velopment of natural resources, thus furnishing more local employment, em-ployment, and providing a route by which the wealth amassed from mining and other industries of the future should return their wealth to the state, instead of sending it out to help with in-continued in-continued on page eight) Maw Speaks (Continued from first page) creasing the wealth of other states, thus continuing to let Utah be called the "Poor Little Rich State" as it is now. Doctor Maw was introduced by his manager, Gordon T. Hyde, who gave highlights on the industrial situations of the present day, and pledged Dr. Herbert B. Maw as a candidate who would not be swayed by friends or capital in his defense of the program which he feels would make for lowered relief re-lief rolls. |
