Show NEW CANYON APPROACH ROAD NOW FINISHED i As an appropriate Christmas gift to the state of Arizona and to the thousands of auto Tourists who eae-h year visit the south rim of the Grand Canyon national j park, the new approach roaol from j U. S. highway 65 to the Grand ; canyon was. on Christmas eve. j completed for its entire length and opened to traffic, aecoroiing to a statement by Park Superintendent. M. R. Ttllotson. With the re.vnt completion of the last section of this road there is now available a modern highway built by and in accordance with the standards of the federal bureau of public roads, all the way from the National Old i Trails Highway .U. S. S6 to the j park. The road is well (traveled I and will be travelable at all sca-: sca-: sons of the year. Tire new approach road loaves highway 65 at a point some 2.5 miles east of Williams and is 57.5 miles in length, making it 60 miles from Williams and 91 from Flagstaff to park headquarters. Although all except some five miles of the 57.5 miles is outside of Grand Canyon national park, the entire co-st of construction and maintenance was me: from federal appropriations under s-pe-cial congressional authority. The five mile stretch of this approach ap-proach road within the park boundary boun-dary is paved and plans have been made for paving or oiling the balance which now carries an excellent ex-cellent surfacing of gravel and crushed rock. This work is to start early next spring and. according ac-cording to present plans, will be completed in two seasons. |
