Show WHAT THE POPPY REPRESENTS "The patriotic spirit of America which enabled the nation to put forth its great World War effort is symbolized in the little red memorial poppy," Mrs. Henry Pickett, president of the Lester IKeate Unit of the American Le-j Le-j gion Auxiliary .declared today as ithe Unit members continued pre-i pre-i parations for the observance of ! Poppy Day. She expressed belief j that the wearing of the popy in I honor of the war dead would help 'reawaken a strong spirit of pat-; pat-; riotism for the nation's peace-time ! efforts. j "The poppy is the badge of : remembrance for those who sacri-I sacri-I ficed their lives in the country's j service," Mrs. Pickett said. "it ! stands for the highest type of pat- riotism that we can conceive. It recalls the spirit of those days when every American was dedicating dedicat-ing his energies and resources to I the national cause and when life i itself was not too much to give for I the country. I "Remembering those days, it is difficult to understand how Americans Am-ericans can be daunted by the country's present difficulties. A people who only fifteen short years ago united with such devotion and energy to meet a war emergency, most certainly have the power to meet any emergencies of peace. The poppy, that symbol of patriotic patrio-tic sacrifice, should awaken in all hearts a deeper conception of our own duties to our country today to-day and inspire us to give in peace the type of service the men who died among the poppies in France gave in time of war." Volunteer workers from the American Legion Auxiliary will offer of-fer poppies on the streets on Memorial Mem-orial day. The poppies have been made by disabled veterans and all contributions received will be used us-ed for the Auxiliary's relief and rehabilitation work among the disabled dis-abled men and their families. |
