Show Committee on Irrigation Project Sends good Report W. B. Slick, vice-president; former Senator David Hirschi, treasurer and director of the Dixie Development and Dairying company, along with Judge Morris, Mor-ris, are in Washington, D. C. in the interests of the company. Mr. Slick writes that very satisfactory sat-isfactory progress is being mads, and in part has the following to say: Washington County News St. George, Utah Judge Morris and Senator Hirschi Hir-schi brought to my attention this morning a piece from the St. George News in reference to beet seed of which I surely want to thank you for, as it will be of great help to me here. And by the way, I am wondering wonder-ing what you folks back home are thinking about our progress here. I would like to say that I have two real wheel horses here with me in Judge Morris and Senator Hirschi; what one overlooks the other one grasps and I am happy to say between them they ovar- look nothing. They have surely done some real work here on our project that will not only be of great importance to Washington County but live forever. I would like you to say in your column that we are not only pushing the deal for all we are worth but we are making headway head-way and we feel sure of success; so all you folks back home be a little patient and in time we will try and furnish employment for all the unemployed men in that entire county. Thanking you again for the write-up you gave in your paper on beet seed I am Most Sincerely, W. B. SLICK As has been pointed out before be-fore in the News,, the securing of government backing on this project and the subsecquent development de-velopment that this would bring to this section of the country, would be one of the finest things that ever happened for Dixie and Utah. This project when complete would bring under development approximately 40,000 acres, and will provide employment for 1,-500 1,-500 men over a period of a year-and-a-half. Mr. Slick was the prime mover in this project in its early stages and succeeded in interesting others. For over a year preliminary investigations and work went forward. Description Des-cription of all land that will come under this development were assembled. as-sembled. This is the most fertil soil in the world and with the wonderful wonder-ful climatic conditions hare, it is possible to raise sugar beet seed. Until it was found possible to raise this crop here in Dixie, all seed had to be imported. In addition ad-dition to this figs, dates, nuts and fruits of all kinds can be brought to the market two to three months before the rest of the country can produce them. In the past there have been floods on the Virgin river that have done considerable damage. With the dams that will be constructed con-structed by this company to hold the water back during flood season, sea-son, there should be no trouble from this source. All those investigating in-vestigating the project are agreed on the feasibility and the ease with which the water can be controlled. con-trolled. Sam King, former Senator Smoot, and many other promin-ant promin-ant men in the state are back of the company and its plans. They have done much to help present this in Salt Lake and at Washington, Wash-ington, D. C. |
