Show INDIANS HAD NO USE FOR GENERAL Cl'STEft Shortly after the massacre of General Gener-al Custer and his troops I met Raln-in-the-Face. I a-sked him who killed Custer. He replied that Custer had several wounds and nobody knew who shot him. After a slight pause he added. In a tense voice as if repressing emotion. "He was a bad man and a liar, and women and children slept better when they knew he was dead." In using the word liar .he made the sign of a forked tongue by putting two outstretched fingers in front of his mouth. What he referred to was an Incident in Oklahoma, a few years before be-fore Custer's death. The general had attacked a big camp of Cheycnnes, Kiowas and Arapahos there. The Indians were not on the war path, but Custer met with considerable loss. Including In-cluding Captian Hamilton, a great-grandson great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton.1 The Indians themselves lost very heavily, including some women and children. The survivors were set adrift destitute of everything. Piles were made of their teepees, poles, robes and all other belongings of no use to their captors, and the whole lot was destroyed by fire. Eastern humanitarians protested against Custer's action In attacking what wa-s represented to be a peaceful village. Put nt that time on the frontier It was lniHsslblc to paint the Indian devil too black. "The only good Indian Is a (lend Indian." This was attributed to Sheridan. He never said It, but It was a common expression. expres-sion. Gen. Ell L. Hugglns In the American Mercury. |
