Show UTAH SOIL NEEDS ORGANIC MATTER "The greatest deficiency of western soils is lack of organic matter. Yet thousands of westerners west-erners wilfully destroy an . excellent ex-cellent source of organic matter each fall," recently declared Dr. Thomas L. Martin, Professor of agronomy and bacteriology at Brigham Young University, Provo, Pro-vo, Utah. A splendid way to secure the needed matter is to use the leaves that fall by the ton every autumn, he points out. If the leaves are covered in a shallow trench, they produce the finest kind of leaf mold to enrich the soil. "But every autumn thousands of misguided persons burn this valuable source of fertility," Dr. Martin said. He has for years preached the proper use of leaves in the conservation of fertility. |
