Show HERE IS SOMETHING FOR VOTERS TO THINK ABOUT i Editorial in Provo Herald) The schools of Utah rank lower today to-day than at any time during the past twenty years. For a long period Col. Ayres of the Russell Sage Foundation and Dr. Frank M. Phillips of the George Washington university, recognized educational ed-ucational leaders, have compiled statistics sta-tistics showing the educational rank of the various states of the union. In 1910 the Utah schools ranked number six on the Ayres scale and number eleven on the Phillips scale. In 1920 Utah had advanced to number siv on the Ayres scale and number five on the Phillips scale. In 1922 Dr. George Thomas resigned re-signed as state superintendent of schools to become president of the University of Utah. Dr. C. N. Jensen was appointed by Governor George R. Mabey to succeed Dr. Thomas as head of the Utah schools. At that time the schools of Utah were at their peak of perfection Utah had never been rated higher educationally than at that particular particu-lar time. During the next four years while Dr. Jensen, the present head of the Utah schools was at the helm, the Utah schools dropped almost out of sight. In 1920 the Utah schools" ranked number twenty-four on the Ayres scale and number twenty on the Phillips scale. Since nothing has been done during dur-ing the past four years to improve conditions here and since the schools of several of the southern states have made decided improvements, Utah is undoubtedly still farther down the list at present. How are the Utah schools to regain re-gain their once envied position in the educational field of the United States? |
