Show NEWPRESIDENCY FDR BAINT GEORGE STAKE Quarterly conference of St. George Stake oi Zion convened here last Saturday Sat-urday and Sunday presided over by Pres. Edw. H. Snow, with President) Heber J. Grant and Apostle Geo. F. Richards of the general authorities present. There was a very good attendance at-tendance at all sessions of the conference, con-ference, there being 102S present Sunday forenoon, and 1000 Sunday afternoon. President Cottam welcomed the Saints and made a report of the stake and the missionary work done each month. President Whitehead made mention men-tion of the condition of the people, saying many young men are obliged to leave their homes for employment, leaving our wards short-handed for male help. Wished these conditions could be changed and work found at home; many might grow fruits and other products and thus furnish work at home. Elder Walter Cannon spoke of his missionary experiences in England and said the people here are much more blessed than those abroad. Elder Jos. K. Nicholes gave a report re-port of the Dixie college, saying the improvement in scholarship had advanced ad-vanced the institution much. We know the value of the school to us as a factor for good, and greatly appreciated appre-ciated this heritage. Elder Geo. F. Richards spoke of calls for duty coming from the Lord and said we must be willing to make sacrifices whenever required of us. Made mention of the great influence for good exercised by the.M. I. A's. President Grant spoke of the great blessing of Church schools and education educa-tion and the money spent on them. Commended the report of Bro. Nicholes Nich-oles on the Dixie college. Saturday Afternoon Eldr Chester Graf of Santa Clara ward reported his mission in the Central States from which he recently recent-ly returned. Elder Richards spoke on the plan of salvation, saying we would obtain perfect happiness through following the Lord Jesus. We should be very careful in all our acts of life and thus avoid trouble; should marry within our faith; keep all promises; be honest hon-est in business dealings, and keep all the commandments. President Grant referred to the remarks re-marks of returned, missionaries; many thousands have proclaimed this gospel but of them none had become converted to another, faith. Made mention of the wonders of radio, etc.; many things are known but are not explainable. Advised the Saints to do the will of the Father in all things; stop evil, do good, pay our tithing and pray to God in all sincerity. sincer-ity. Sunday Forenoon After singing, prayer, etc., Elder Ceo. F. Richards spoke of what was expected from the little children; their future depends upon what they are while young; all should strive to grow up good men and women. . Stake Reorganized President Grant made mention of the reorganization of the stake presidency, pres-idency, and proposed the release of the stake presidency, which was sustained. sus-tained. Pres. Grant presented the names of Joseph K. Nicholes as stake President with W. O. Bentley and Walter Cannon as first and second counselors respectively; they were unanimously sustained. President Nicholes said he appreciated appre-ciated the confidence of his leaders and hoped to serve the people; pledged pled-ged all he had for the work of God and asked the faith and confidence of 'he people. "I have always loved this Dixie country and it will be the greatest pleasure of my life to assist ' building it up." President Cannon said he hoped to he able to live up to the trust put in him and to perform the duties now devolving upon him in a pleasing Manner. President Grant spoke of the two vaeaneies in the high council. Brs. Thos. P. Cottam and Geo. F. Whitehead were chosen to fill these vacancies. President Grant further sta'ed tht Brother T. P. Cottam had been chosen as president of the St. George temple with Bro. G. F. Whitehead White-head as his assistant. President Grant praised the. splendid splen-did work done by Pres. Snow and his counselors, T. P. Cottam and G. F. Whitehead; he also spoke very highly high-ly of Apostle Erastus Snow, the fath-ei fath-ei of Pres. Edw. H. Snow, and the great work done by him for the people; peo-ple; Erastus Snow was a man of great ability and Edward H. Snow is a worthy son of a worthy sire. Spoke highly of the new stake presidency; we should all desire to be servants, then we shall be a success no matter how humble we are. The greatest tribute that can be paid one is that he was honest and true. Sunday Afternoon President Snow said in part; The past twenty-four years of my life have been spent as your president, and I hope I have never lost your confidence. I wish to extend to Pres. Cottam and Pres. Whitehead gratitude for their loyal support; I also wish to express gratitude to the high council. I feel that the people have given me support at all times. I also owe the Church authorities a debt of gratitude for this position of responsibility and development. My heart will always be here for this people, and my interests will also be here. I will always sustain the new presidency. I am anxious that you should improve and go forward for good; we must continue to excel in our activities, especially in character; charact-er; would like to see our college more powerful in the development of character; this would be greater than mines. We should continue to cultivate culti-vate song and music. Felt grateful for his release as president of the stake; asked all to support Pres. Nicholes. I feel full of faith and confidence in the new presidency. Elder Richards said we must be very careful and thoughtful of our acts. Condemned the saying "I'll try anything once," as fraught with danger. The speaker gave quite a long talk on ' Repentance and its need. Urged all to support the new officers. President Grant gave a long talk detailing the conversion of his brother. broth-er. He prayed God to bless the new stake presidency and asked the people peo-ple to support them and pray for them. |
