Show Ute History Classes Involve Communities Ute History classes In grades four and seven sc at Todd Whiterocks and andest West est Jr High School are completing their six week unity with community Involvement involve ol ment and en even greater Interest than In Inthe Inthe inthe the three previously successful years ears Eighty students at Todd Elementary School and Whiterocks and 40 at West Jr High have ha used with pride the basic text Ute People an historic study I which was compiled specifically for their use Ilse by the Uintah School District under Title I and the Center for Western Studies Stud ies les at the University of Utah A VARIETY of supplementary les included field trips Mrs Denver's slides stories of Butch Cassidy and the Outlaws legends demonstrations of Indian In dian songs and dances over a hundred books on Indians and two films Broken Arrow and Ten Wise Who Dared Parents and pioneers in the communIties communities communities have helped with stories stones and legends leg ends and rose one other mother so was was so pleased at her sons son's interest in the course that lint she furnished Buffalo Berry Derry jelly jell for the Grease Bread treat PARENTS WHO have Ime helped are Virginia Virginia Vir VII ginia Jini Houston Marietta Reed Mr 1111 and Mrs Wallace Dennis Dan Old Elk and Archie Curley Instructors in the classes are arc Lorilee Crittenden Robert Reay Anna Mitchie and John Mair Title I staff working with the classes are arc Grant Drollinger Norma Denver and June Lyman INQUIRIES ABOUT the Ute History classes have come from schools and colleges col leges throughout the country as it Is Isa isa isa a project unique In the field of Indian education The Title I staff has been invited to the Phoenix office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to demonstrate the unit Tests given at the beginning of the study indicated very little knowledge of Ute Ule history A post test showed amazIng amazing amazing ing progress with very high accomplish accomplish- ment |
