Show SHOW THE COLORS June 14 is Flag Day It marks the anniversary anniversary anni annl of the day in 1777 when the United States flag was adopted This year it deserves more than the usual routine gestures of observance observance observance ob ob- servance out of respect for a a symbol of freedom freedom free free- dom that has been spat upon burned and dragged in the dirt during the past year with alarming impunity by malcontents and bums of all stripes who respect neither the flag nor the United States It is a sad commentary on our times that laws have had to be passed protecting the flag from desecration Until recently recently re reo re- re mutilating the flag in the minds of most of us was tantamount to treason But somehow the fog of permissiveness that has settled like over the land has obscured ed our vision of the flag and the deathless ideals that the Stars and Stripes The easiest way to gain perspective on the meaning of the flag is to visualize for a moment moment mo mo- ment the void that would surround us if there simply were no flag flag no no focal point on which to center the sense of purpose and principles of a nation In common with the US U.S. Constitution Con The Declaration of Independence and other physical manifestations of freedom under representative government the flag makes known to all mankind the reason for our existence Flag Day Is a good opportunity to show the colors Y |
