Show during this term of the district court a matter was nas determined that is of vast importance to white settlers who are desirous of leasing indian lands in leasing tho the allotments of indian minor children the parents are not authorized to sign the leases to provide some person competent in the eyes of the law to sign such leases a number of settlers had arranged to have the parents of indian minor children appear before the district court and receive appointments as legal guardians of such children the court held that in case of the appointment of indian parents as guardians they would be compelled to give good and sufficient bonds in amounts that would bp be required of white people who might be appointed guardians As it is impossible for indians to secure bondsmen no guardians for indian children can qualify as such therefore it Is 13 practically impossible to lease the lands of indian children unla unless sa the department of the interior pro provides legal guardians for them |
