Show correspondence ignoto from the rr itma enterprises arii valley tz territorial As you have published a caril card in your issue of last week in m which the carson valley nalley correspondent of tile the san francisco herald gerald is c r sons bons with falsehood arid as it is is 11 well 1 I n known in in california that I 1 am that correspondent I 1 claim the privilege of replying through your our columns of the seventy se enty sigr signers ners of this card about one half are known tome to ne odthe of the I 1 lest est I 1 never nc er heard bc before fore and for aught I 1 know they may be mere suppositious personages if the character of those whom I 1 know were as well ell understood in california as here I 1 would deem it unnecessary to maks make any reply carson a corre pon dent of the sacramento union umon whose abose real name is is unknown to me ins in a communication to that paper declared that all those who compose compos e the mormon faction here have bae two to or more atves iii living in somewhere or are arc married to who have more than one busbani hu baral it was not stated that all the husbands or hii wives es resided la in this valley my offence offense seems to be in in admitting ting the truth of this charge knowing that some of the mormon faction w ere e so situated situate dl admitted the charge against the whole being unprepared to deny it I 1 would gladly have refuted the charge if I 1 could which I 1 intimated m in my communication muni cation to the herald the customs of all christian countries for ages past have clearly defined the position pos i tion of a man with t two 0 wn wives es and a w woman oman with two husbands husband the laws of all such countries declare them criminal and justly consign consig agn them to the penitentiary nor does docs the name of religion mitigate the crime or its punishment but polygamy is is not the only crime crime which the mormons cormons and their sympathizers are guilly of though they have haie the pardon of the president hanging about their necks they stand convicted of treason before the bar of public bubli opinion P i and it it is is hardly fit that t they be C entrusted n anth the administration t of the government the card to which I 1 have referred baars a falsehood upon its face by declaring claring that there is not one man on the eastern slope of the sierra nevada m mho ho claims allegiance to the mormon faith one of the sit signers ners of the card has often that iha t hs he is a mormon ju ia fat fact he 16 rarely loses bose s an opportunity of beclar declaring ing it pull publicly icly A gentleman long resident here told me yesterday in yo your r presence mr editor that he could name more than a dozen persons in this valley who claim allegiance to the mormon faith the ground of ray ny opposition to the utah statutes or rather to their admi administration ft in this county is falsely charged by one of the immaculate seventy g tomy to my disappointment at not receiving the position now held ly by john child 1 I 1 can easily prove by gov cumming himself that I 1 never sought this appointment and a id I 1 could alo albo prove to his excellency cel lency that if I 1 had bad done so I 1 could have brought ht such influence to bear upon him in my favor as could have secured it to me but I 1 desire no official p position 09 1 i least of all do I 1 wish to hol hold d an office which I 1 well know a great majo majority F of the people would have remain vacant when I 1 am one of a minority Y on any question I 1 hope at least that it will be a respectable minority I 1 have mentioned this charge b because because it has appeared in one of the S sacramento ac papers equally groundless is the charge which has been made al against me that I 1 affiliate with the vigilance committee here I 1 have always aiwas opposed and always will oppose such ille illegal al organizations in 1836 1856 1 I did all I 1 could ag against the vigilance committee of san ddn francisco and I 1 have now in in i my possession letters from prominent citizens citi zent of california in which the efficiency of my aid in in suppressing that dan dangerous crous rebellion is handsomely acknowledged ledred in this valley it is well known that ecat I 1 did more last summer in opposing the action of the committee than any other person I 1 oppose the operation of the utah statutes here because I 1 apprehend their establishment h ment will destroy our prospects for a separate ep arate territorial government and b because eca use I 1 am convinced of the incapacity of the office officers rs appointed as well as for the reason above mentioned viz that a large majority of the people here in fact I 1 may my nearly the whole 0 of f the respectable part of our population are unwilling to be governed by the laws which lave have been enacted by a traitorous band of foreign vagabonds to suit mt the peculiar ieva of brigham young in conclusion I 1 will say that for the sake of those who hare given me tho the trouble of writing this letter I 1 hope to have no further occasion to notice them RICHARD IV ALLEN |
