Show THE b TO APPLY tuberculin TEST has haa no III effect whatever on healthy cows cowa and does no harm to those afflicted I 1 it if a cow has a small quantity of tuberculin introduced beneath tho the skin a temporary fever will result which can be detected by taking tho the temperature of the animal a h healthy althy animal shows no such fever tuberculin has no III effect whatever on healthy animals and no harmful effect on animals it does not in the amounts used in testing have any effect on the progress of the disease in the animal nor can it in any way produce the disease with many herds it has been used regularly for 10 to 16 15 years with absolutely sol no injurious effects the statements that the test causes abdor tion or other ailments aro are without foundation tho flow of milk Is not changed to any appreciable extent even in the case of tubercular animals tho the temperature of cattle unlike that of man varies widely not only in different animals but in the same animal at different times the temperature of a cow Is usually between proper M method ethod of thrusting syringe through the skin degrees P F that of calves and of tat fat stock somewhat higher while old cows and those low in vitality usually show somewhat lower temperatures by means of a hypodermic syringe the tuberculin Is injected beneath the skin the most convenient place tor for injection being just back or in front of 0 the shoulders shou this places the operator out of danger of being kicked the injection may be made on tho the side toward the operator or on the other side by reaching over the back of the animal the skin akin is lifted up with one hand and the needle thrust through at right angles but parallel to the side of the animal so that the contents of the syringe may be discharged unde underneath meath the skin but not into the muscles the syringe should be provided with a stop so that a definite amount of tuber tuberculin and no more can be easily injected tho the av average of the temperatures before injection is determined and it the highest temperature after the injection is 2 degrees P F or more above the average normal the animal is generally regarded as having given a po positive reaction usually the rise in temperature of a tubercular animal is much greater 4 to 6 degrees F and there is no question as to the result when the rise Is close to 2 degrees tb the a reaction Is classed as doubtful in all cases and especially in the doubtful ones the interpretation of the records should be made by an experienced person some reacting animals show the effects of the tuberculin by shivering refusal to eat etc in some cases these symptoms are very noticeable in others they do not appear at al A position of operator when inserting needle from opposite side of animal I 1 al all in the case of non reacting animals anial no such simp symptoms toms are ever noted I 1 the tuberculin test is not always absolutely correct for a number of reasons but when aben applied with judgment and care it is co correct in at least 95 per cent of the cases |
