Show NO PLACE FOR HIS STATUE A memorial to general spinner left in obscurity washington standing in the basement ment of the corcoran art arf gallery in ill this city Is the splendid bronze statue of francis ellaa elias spinner former treasurer of the united states and the man mail who first opened tho the doors of the government departments to female clerks this statue was secured through the efforts of the women of the treasury department who labored long and patiently to raise a sufficient sum suin to have it made itna with the belief and hope that it would be given a suitable place near the treasury but now it seems that the excellent representation of the man and a thoroughly creditable work of art Is not to receive the recognition which his grateful countrywomen countrywoman country women so earnestly and honestly tried to secure for him the originators af 0 t the spinner Mo IM morial association have come to the conclusion that the statue lever will be given a conspicuous place in the city of washington although they have not ceased their efforts to have the memory of gen spinner so honored the statue was completed early in the administration of president cleve cieve land mrs john A logan and others other made application to secretary of the treasury carlisle to have the statue placed upon one of the approaches to tho the treasury building guaranteeing that the government should not be put to one cent of cost in having the work done mr air carlisle refused the appeal of the committee saying that he felt satisfied that he did not have the authority thi 0 rity to grant suli such a request and that there never had been a statue erected to any of the men who had served as the head of the great department part ment the sculptor mr ar elliott El llott died and the statue was removed from his atu btu studio to the corcoran art gallery with the understanding it could be removed at any time the women found a suitable place for it from that day to the present the work of art has occupied an obscure place in the basement of the gallery where it seldom would be seen or recognized it if not pointed out by some one familiar with itsu history the women of the treasurers treasur ers office adored gen spinner ile he was their mentor guide philosopher and friend |
