Show jI r Till? vLY JOURNAL -- ' t.,.: LOGAN. r FEBRUARY 22 framing of a jxifect man. -lie might have founded s monarchy, for Ito people were ready to acquiesce in any plan of his at the close of the seven years war brought by his genius to such a happy termination. Iu such an event none would have dated to question his assumption Of lha kingly power. Ho chose, rather, to give his voice to a government of the people, whose rulers should be chosen by their suffrages. Of his own act he surrendered the i tins of power after eight years of service, when by a word he might have perpetuated himself in the administration until the end of his days. He wus not without ambition; but it was of that sublime quality which makes self subordinate to country. He was in public service almost .continuously from 1773 to 1797; yet in all these jcar lie lohged.for the quiet and happiness of his home on the Iotoinac. The perils of his country having parsed, he felt himself free to yield to this temper which was accentuated by the decay meidciit to age. Yet, when a little later war vitb foreign power seemed imminent, bo yielded readily to the popular cull nud accepted the leadership of the American anny. Happily tho cloud passed without bursting, and ho f pent the remainder of bin days, brief their number, in his beloved home, where lie died the victim of medical stupidity, in tho closing days c.f tho lart year of the century which hud been made glorious by his illustrious deeds. Whether as private citizen, soldier, lawmaker, or ruler of a predestincdly great republic, the nupeib virtues of the man shone a bright stars. 0 well poised was lie, that oue. might lind it difficult to determine in what he most excelled. Yet none may doubt that tho combination of the whole gives to hihtory the loftiest character to bo found in all its pages. He alone of all humanity is tho ideal man of alt the natiuns, the adored of all who reach out after the noblest ideals of bring. This country is great iu the matchless achievements of the nowdying century, but the world without holds her greatest in that she gave to humanity a Washington, as b pattern for true human greatness- - in-- whatever form.
