inauguration of governor wells and the state officers at the capital monday was an imposing affair jt is estimated that fifteen thousand people crowded into the salt lake tabernacle to witness the auspicious event the day was all that could be desired in point of weather enthusiasm and success the day began with a procession according to the salt sait lake papers the parade was one of the most moat striking features of the inaugural inauguration arid and made a 6 fitting pre preliminary imi i to the impressive ceremonies that followed at the tabernacle it was a complete success and under the able direction of marshal burton arid and his aids was conducted without an error every organization was in its place when the command forward was given ard the line of march was completed IV line behind was a huge float loaded with apparatus upon which expert gymnasts performed to the edification of the concourse then followed a goodly membership of the scandinavian societies and succeeding this came a long line of citizens in carriages and sleighs AT THE TABER NACLE the people began flocking to the tabernacle an hour before the time fixed for the commencement of the exercises about 1120 0 the doors were ere opened and streams of humanity poured in through each until the ahe vast building was packed from floor to dome as probably it had bad never been packed before and the were saluting with storms of enthusiasm at 1250 1230 p m secretary of the territory C C richards the acting governor called the meeting to order the sixteenth infantry band rendered a musical selection mr air richards stated that president woodruff was not net in sufficiently good health to permit his delivering the invocation but the a aged ed president had prepared a prayer which would be road b by y president george Q cannon sir mr cannon was ap plaue and read the prayer the tha chorus lead by professor evan stephens sang the star span spangled aled banner in a manner that stirred the souls of the assemblage and elicited cheers t t the president then ballel upon hon i J L rawlins cawlina to read the proclamation of statehood mr rawlins was prolonged applause and read the proclamation cla mation after the reading deadina of the proclamation mr rawlins turned to governor wells and said 1 I now have the lionor honor to to heber M wells the first governor of utah the pen used by president Pres dent cleveland at ten minutes to mid on the day of july 1894 in signing the bill under which utah became a state I 1 present it to you in order that it may be preserved in the wells calling a special session of the legislature as follows FIRST by the governor of the state of utah whereas the constitution of this state does not fix the time for the commencement of the first regular session or of the legit legislature lature of the state of utah by reason of which an extraordinary occasion exists therefore I 1 heber al wells governor of the state of utah by virtue of the authority vested in me by the constitution of this sf state ate do hereby convene the legislature of this state in special session to commence on the ath day of january A D 1896 at 2 p in of that day 1 at I the joint city and county buil building dirt in tho the city and county of salt lake for the purpose of fixing a time certain by le legislative enactment for the commencement men cement of the
