Show A FATAL ACCIDENT father ephraim watson of rich county loses his life IN THE CANYON NEAR HEAR LAKE TOWN the deceased was one of the first white settlers Sett lera of the bear lake country EDI the uncertainty of life was per perhaps never more exemplified than it was here on tuesday father ep ephraim h balm watson one of the first white men to locate here started out in good health and spirits with a load of the products of his garden to market at evanston and when he got to the forks of the canyon I 1 about two or three miles from town his ten year old boy got down to get him a drink of water while the team by the way a team that had indulged in running away considerably sider nider ably of late halted lial ted one of the animals rubbed its briddle off on to the wagon tongue and the animals beginning to run mr watson pulled on the lines 0 fco o that the team made a circle backwards and on going the second round the wagon overturned and mi watson was buried under the load his son stood at the front of the team just previous and tried to stay them but they were too much for him the poor boy called to his father but all the response he be could get was a slight groan and all was over As soon as tile the news came to town willis john ion bon joseph L cheney and others went up to the scene of the terrible accident and when they overturned the wagon wagon M found the deceased on oil his hands and knees and his head touching the ground and the overturned spring seat and the load above him so far as could be learned the shock was so sudden that it must have suffocated tile the poor old 0 gentleman there did not appear to have been any broken bones As soon as possible he was brought home ard coroner jas S moffat came onar ocr from meadowville Meadow ville and with joseph weston willis johnson and george henry robinson as jurors held an inquest over the remains and returned their verdict that said ephraim watson came to his death on tb the e of august by the accidental overthrow of his loaded wagon 0 upon upon him at the forks of lake town canyon it need not be added that this fatality completely unnerved the whole of our people mr watson was a native of clayton yorkshire england and died at the age of 01 61 years and two months was baptized into the church of jesus christ of latter day saints in 1853 and emigrated to utah county and carne came in the land hand cart company in about 1858 and dwelt in lelli lehi for tome time previous to his comin coining to bear lake valley ile he was among the first to settle here in lake town then an indian camp and shared in ili the trials and privations incident to the making of these homes of the saints was a very abstemious man had held and incani 0 ed several positions of amon among b the people was first counselor to 10 bishop ira fur for ten or twelve years and in all the walks in ill life it can be very truthfully said that ho he tried to honor his god his religion and to do right 0 by bv his bis fellow men inen to the u utmost tul ost of his ability for the coura courage e of his convictions he buffered conviction and fine a short time ago for unlawful cohabitation only last sunday ho he attended and assisted in the exercises at the church meeting lie ile leaves two wives and four children and a sympathizing path izing community to mourn his sad and sudden departure into the great hereafter under the presidency of bishop ira Na beker funeral services were I 1 held it at the meeting house at 20 Q p m on wednesday and in addition to the usual choral services services and prayers appropriate addresses were made ande by dishop bishop idrac T price elders eldera joseph robinson and joaeph irwin and bishop ira ker the meeting houpe was crowded with our people and visitors from Mcadow ville and round valley wards most of whom followed the hearse to the grave yard where after the singing of a hymn the dedicatory prayer pra y er was offered by elder nils 0 As we write mr james bearl a pi pioneer here whose coming 0 was preceded pae ceded by mr watsons resi residence hero here mentioned intentioned as a I 1 peculiar acu ecu incident coincident co that exactly 23 years ago almost to the minute Illi nute of the accident lie ha was as he was coming into round valley this precinct ct first introduced to mr watson I 1 another peculiarity worthy of note is the fact that the deceased was often heard to express his dread of and hope that be would not have to linger upon a bed of sick sickness ness pr prior io r to his death truly a m man art can be cut cutoff off shortly and suddenly from this life respectfully yours JOSEPH ingin |
