Show The Corean [Korean] revolution was very brief, but it was crowded with highly dramatic incidents. It was the work, principally, of a traitorous conspirator named Tai-on-Kun, a prince representing a party of the Corean [Korean] nation who have ever been hostile to intercourse with other nations. He took advantage of a mutinous spirit among the troops caused by poor food, and incited them to a massacre of the Japanese legation. Corea [Korea] is a principality, tributary to Japan, but under the suzerainty of China. During the trouble, the Queen committed suicide by taking poison, and at the same time administered a fatal draught to her heir apparent, a son aged eleven years. The rebellion was quickly quelled by the energetic action of the Japanese government. It cost Corea [Korea] about $3,000,000. |
