Show Wafted on the Wires. Galveston, Nov, 20? The ? ? says ???? ????, a Mexican, was hanged today in the jail yard. He fell nine feet, breaking his neck, and died in seven minutes. He was a sheep herder. He suspected the infidelity of his wife, and one day, while washing clothes in a pool, his wife came for water and Uvalto? Struck her with a stick, knocking her into the water, and held her under until she was drowned, then dragged her body and mutilated it with a knife in a fearful manner. He acknowledged his guilt on the scaffold, and exhibited but little emotion. New York, Nov. 8.- The Tribune has an editorial on the Mormon question, from which the following points are gleaned. The time is close at hand when the population of the Territory will be so large that to refuse Utah admission of a state will look like on arbitrary and unjust departure from a well established precedent, and there will be practical inconveniences also in continuing the present method of administration. The democratic party has for the moment something to gain by the admission of Utah. The two senators and one representative to be elected under the state constitution would certainly rule democratic. The three electoral votes of the state would be given to the democratic candidate. If the election of president should be thrown into the house, the vote of Utah would count there as much as the vote of New York. It is not to be supposed that the Washington democrats are insensible of these conditions. Polygamy cannot be abolished unless it is broken up by national authority while Utah is still a territory. Nobody doubts that under a state government crime would be legalized and perpetuated. It is polygamy, which erects? what is practically a foreign state in the middle of the American continent, ruled by a community which has no sympathy with the Union, no respect for the laws, and not interest in its prosperity. The American people never will consent to the election of Utah as a state until the barbarous practice which disrupts it from the whole Christian world has been abolished; and before there can be any serious question of admission, the laws against polygamy must be amended and put in force. Louisville, Ky. No. 28.- A fearful tornado played havoc in the southeastern portion of this morning. A terrible gale stuck the city at the center of Fourth street, Rev. Stuart Robinson s house being one of the first to suffer. Thence it continued in a northeastern direction , leaving the city ????? ???? south fence of Central Park is all blown down. The old Louisville ??? ballpark is completely riddled?, not the least portion of the fence is standing except half the east side. It s roof and grand stand is mashed into kindling wood and blown away. The grounds and streets are strewn with broken boards and timbers. Dr. Stewart Volloston s? house is slightly damaged, about a third of the roof s being blown off. Washington? Dec. 1.00 The house and senate assembled yesterday and transacted the formal preliminary business incidental to the opening of a session. The Indians before the peace commission all wear concealed arms, while the members have guns at hand ready for the slightest hostile movement. Washington, Dec. 1.- The Senate at noon was called to order by Vice President Wheeler and prayer was offered by the chaplain. Speaker Randall called the House to order at noon. A roll call showed 232 members present, 56 absent. At 1:30? p.m., the President s annual message was received and read. New York, Dec. 1. On the proposition to nominate Grant, the Senate says; We want to ??? the member of congress willing to take the responsibility of offering the proposition to buy off Grant as a candidate by an enormous pension to be added on the backs of over loaded tax-payers. If the republicans decide to take him up as their choice, and to stake the ??? of a third term and the restoration of Grantsim In the presidential campaign, let them show their hands boldly. By all means, let us, once and for all, settle this question and decide whether military despotism, can be erected on the ruins of the republic in the first century of its existence. Grant is exactly the man to represent the fallen state of the party whose managers are now presenting him to the front with prepared ovations. |
