Show Rare Chips Over 87,000 persons are engaged in the manufacturing industries of Chicago, and $77,000,000 of capital are invested, with an annual product of nearly $350,000,000. The Jesuits expelled from France are entrenching themselves in English and Spanish soil. They have established nine colleges through Spain. Large buildings to be used for similar purposes have been purchased on their behalf in Wales, near Canterbury and other places. A London Roman Catholic newspaper states that in the year 1879 two thousand persons renounced Protestantism in England and became Roman Catholics. It also says that seventeen out of every twenty of these perverts were prepared for the step under ritualistic teaching. The venerable wooden church at Litchfield, Connecticut, where Dr. Lyman Beecher preached from 1810 to 1826, is still standing, although removed a short distance from where it originally stood, I order to make room for a building of modern style. It is severely simple in architecture, and is esteemed by the Litchfield people as a valuable relic. It is a curious fact, brought out in the statistics of insurance experts, that in all the great cities of the civilized world, the death-rate is decreasing. The science of right living causes increased longevity. From 1873 to 1878 the decrease inn the London death-rate, as compared with the preceding six years was four per cent. A train on the Pittsburg and Fort Wayne road recently ran sixty-four miles in seventy-one minutes, and another ran 131 miles in 120 minutes, or 65 ½ miles in an hour, right along, if the figures are correct. A special train on the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western road, with the President of the company on board, ran eighty miles in eighty minutes. The increasing value of old prints is illustrated by a late sale in London. One of Rembrandt's etchings sold for L15, which the last owner bought at auction for L1212s, another for L2610s, against its cost of L22; another for L60s, against a cost of L4. But another sold for L1510s which was purchased at auction for L1610s. New York capitalists are the projectors of a canal through the Isthmus of Cape Cod to connect Buzzard's Bay, shortening the route between Boston and New York some ninety miles. A force of 2,500 men is to be put to work at once, and the trough, seven and three-fourths miles long and two hundred yards wide at the narrowest point, will soon be cut through the gravelly isthmus. To the praise of the company too it should be said that the last five months the compensation of the employers has been at the rate prevailing previous to 1873, There has also been a marked gain in the net receipts in the leased lines west of Pittsburg. A rare article of fright was seen at the Pittsburg depot lately. It was a chubby, round-faced, bright-looking boy of eleven years, who had traveled as a piece of express matter from some place in Texas. He had a paper tag tied to him, just as though he was a piece of merchandise, and on the tag was written the address of his consignee. He was entered on the waybills and manifests just like any other freight, and as he passed from the hands of one express messenger to another he was duly receipted for. The number of post offices established during the year ending June 30, 1880, was 3,462, and the number, discontinued during the same period was 1,328, making the net increase in the number of offices during the year 2,134, which is a much larger increase than for any previous year. The total number of offices I operation on June 30, 1880, was 42, 989. Of this number 1,701 were filled by appointments of the Postmaster-General. During the past year there were 11,391 appointments of postmasters for various reasons. |
