Show FROM MALAD. Hon. Henry Peck accompanied by Hon. D. R. Jones, called upon us a few days ago. Mr. Peck was a member of the Council and Mr. James of the House, in the last legislature. Both gentlemen reside in Malad, and in conversation they gave us many points of interest in relation to the affairs of that town and Oneida county. The last term of the district court, at which the Hinckley murderers were tried, cost Oneida county $8,000. There are two terms per year, and if the next is equally expensive, over half of the revenue of the county will be consumed in this court alone. A good deal of indignation is expressed at the course of Mr Bennett, the murderers' attorney, in prolonging the proceedings in the case, and imposing upon the county a heavy expense. There is strong talk of a new court house in Malad. The county now pays for rent the interest on $7,000 for inferior accomodations [accommodations]. Malad grows and thrives, and contains a goodly number of energetic citizens. Malad will afford hearty support to W. L. Webster if he will run for the legislature again. |
