Show A somewhat ludicrous incident occurred during the trial of Peacock for liquor selling, last Saturday. The defense wanted to prove that Mrs. Peacock ran the business, and that her husband had nothing to do with it, and to this end called a witness, an Englishman, who testified that both Peacock and his wife were English. Counsel. "Do not women in England frequently conduct a business independently of their husband?" Witness. "Yes sir." Counsel. "Are not the women often the business men of the house?" Witness. "Yes sir." The prosecution quickly interposed with an objection to the testimony of a witness who would swear that, in any country, the women were business men. And a ripple of laughter that swelled to a roar as the crowd caught the joke, both counsel and witness subsided. |
