Show PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE. On Monday the 19th inst., the special session of the Senate convened. It was called to order by Senator Harris. After considerable maneuvering, Senator Bayard of Delaware was elected President pro tem. of the Senate, and he is, consequently de facto vice-president of the United States. Senator Bayard has for many years been a leader of the Democratic party, and is at the present time, one of the ablest and most experienced statesman to that party. He possesses the unqualified respect of Republicans and Democrats alike, and is one of the purest of our living politicians. He is, in fact, the Garfield of the Democratic party, and should be, by any possibility, become president of the United States, as he would, in case of the death or disability of President Arthur, the country would have ?? magistrate in no respect inferior to the late martyr. |
