Show TIME OF FATTENING. In the Early Spring and the Fall the Best Gains Are Made. s A writer on tho fattening of hogs says: Thero nro two seasons of the yenr when tho greatest gains can bo mndo In hogs of tho samo typo and under similar conditions with tho samo quantity of corn. Thcso aro In tho early spring, beforo tho weather becomes excessively hot, nnd In September, Sep-tember, October nnd Novcmbor, beforo be-foro It becomes excessively cold. Prudent Pru-dent farmers, therefore, aim to do tho bulk of their feeding In thcso months. Tho objection to early fall feeding lies In this, that tho packers usually mako a combined effort to bent down tho price of hogs at tho beginning of tho packing season. The fact that a very large per cent, of tho hogs aro fed In tho fnl! of tho year, and thrown upon tho mnrkct, enables them to do so In ordinary seasons without much difficulty. This season, howover, is likely to provo an exception. Tho packing season begins tho 1st of November, No-vember, nnd tho sharp demand at present prices for' both llvo hogs nnd pork products makes It probablo that tho usual effort will not bo mado, or, at least, not with tho samo earnestness earnest-ness this year. Whilo It Is truo, as a rule, that higher prices provall In February Feb-ruary and March than In November nnd December, tho difficulty In making weights during tho first-named months, and tho heavy expense Involved In-volved In tho way of keeping up tho nnlmnl hent, go far to neutralize tho difference In prices. Whero tho farmer farm-er does not sell In car load lots It is a good thing to havo n fow hogs to turn oft at different seasons of tho yenr. It Is also a good plan to havo tho largest lots to turn off at tho close of tho season, sea-son, when tho greatest gnlns can bo mado with the samo amount of corn, |
