Show HINTS ON CLEANING IVORY. Much Care Necessary to Prevent Spoiling Its Tone. Ivory toilet articles aro qulto as fashlonablo ns sliver ones now, and tho fact that thoy aro moro difficult to clean tn no wny detracts from their popularity. It Is not easy to removo stains from tho mellow, creamy material ma-terial without spoiling Its tono. Somo useful hints on cleaning Ivory nro given herowlth: When tho stains nro very slight nnd do not seom to bo permanent, though thoy cannot bo rubbed oft with a dry cloth, wash tha Ivory thoroughly In warm water and soap suds nnd then, without drying It on n cloth, plnco It In tho bright sunlight for a few minutes. This exposure ex-posure will usunlly removo tho stains. After thoy havo disappeared wash tho Ivory again In soap and water, rlnso It thoroughly nnd dry carefully with a soft cloth. Where tho stains do not disappear ontlrely after contact with tho sun's rays tho Ivory should bo washed again In soap and wator, then rinsed tn clear wator to which a Ilttlo lemon Juice has been added. Caro must bo taken to havo tho tomporaturo of tho wator right, as too great heat will in J tiro the Ivory. Very dark dlscoloratlons require tho sorvlccs of an expert to remove, though ono may bo fairly successful by rubbing oxnllc acid solution, not too strong, nnd npplylng this to tho dark spots or streaks with n brush. Afterward wash tho Ivory well In clear warm water and dry with absorbent cotton or a soft cloth and then leave In tho sunshlno or In a warm placo to bleach. Tho acid of a lemon Is not harmful to tho most dollcato pleco of Ivory; In fact tho Julco of a lemon can bo applied ap-plied with a tnlxturo of cleansing powder pow-der or whiting directly to tho Ivory without running any risk of spoiling Its tono or texture. It should, however, how-ever, bo removed quickly and tho Ivory thoroughly cleansed afterward with plenty of warm wator. Cabinet pieces that becomo discolored can bo cleaned In this way and will bo greatly great-ly Improved In color and appearance. |
