From that nucleus has grown astate of 300.000 people, ami because of the hardihood and braver)' shown by the pioneers of Utah the magnificent empire known as the inter-mountain country owes its existence. It is therefore fitting that the central idea of tlv :( iebration should be to honor the deeds of the pioneers by honoring hon-oring those who are left and their descendants. The celebration will be conducted by a State commission and a portion of the expense has been provided for by legislative enactments. It is the design of the commission, of which Hon. Spencer Clawson is chairman, to expend not less than $ioo,ooor The celebration, while it will be in honor of the pioneers, will also commemorate the obtaining of Statehood State-hood and the cementing of ties of friendship and confidence among a people once unhappily politically-divided. politically-divided. It will also be an announcement an-nouncement to the world that Utah is proeressive; that witnin her borders bor-ders mere is room for thousands of settlers and that her people are, with hands outstretched, ready to welcome wel-come all who may be disposed to seek wealth, health and happiness among them. Magnificent street parades will take place by day and by night; excursions and entertain-' ments will afford a constant source of pleasure; the grandest pyrotech-nical pyrotech-nical exhibition the West has known will edify all; georgeous floats, depicting de-picting the resources of the State, the hardships endured by the pioneers pio-neers and the progress of fifty years, will be features; concerts in which from 600 to 1,000 people will assist vocalists of worldrwide reputations will be given, and the grand ball at Saltair, the finest , bathing resort in America, will be a revelation to those of the visitors who come with the idea in their heads that the people of the West are barbarians. At this time it is not possible to more than outline the features of the programme. Suffice to say that the preliminary arrangments for the event are in thehandsof experienced and competent people. and that the promises made that it will be the greatest celebration ever held in the West will be fulfilled to the smallest detail. 1 .
