Show lars for the same sorvica. This is the secret; let the electors of tho new state come to the front and do their duty at the polls and the problem is solved. We have heard not a little comment com-ment in regard to the admission of Utah to Statehood and of a somewhat some-what adverse nature, to the effect that as heretofore the expenses of the Territory have been paid to a great extent by the Gove rum ent, these burdens will, under statehood, state-hood, be wholly upon the inhabitants inhabi-tants of the state, thereby increasing increas-ing our tsxef, and when these taxes become due next fall a howl will bo set up through the length and breadth of the state. The proposition proposi-tion that our burdens will bo increased, in-creased, that our taxe3 for some years, at least, will be- heavier, is a correct one. This no one can gainsay but it is not the intent of V of a Republican form of Govern ment like ours that any subdivision of the Territory over which it exercises ex-ercises control, shall be under the immediate control of and subservient subser-vient to, the general government after it has acquired the conditons as to population and wealth to en-tittle en-tittle it to the rights granted to states, and with increased privileges, privi-leges, it is in the very nature of things that there must be increased bnrdflns: The remedy for the state of things which we are sorry to say exists and existsd for years in the Territory, rests with the people themselves thero will be a sufficient amount of. revenue collected col-lected to pay the legitimate expenses of the state, if the public servants exercise the game care of the people's peo-ple's money that they give to their own private business, so that if the people refuse to support a man that they have reason to believe be-lieve is in for nothing but spoils, the evil will be corrected. Can this be acomplished? We point with pride to the members of tho County Court of Washington County as an affirmative answer to this' question. One member who has been present at nearly all the sessions of the Court, charged the County less then Thirty Dollars for his yearly services; to equalize the taxe3 of the county for tho past year cost the pooplo loss than fifty dollars whiio some of her counties which might be named, with no more population and whoso assessed valuation is little if any larger than that of Washington County, tho people were charged from Two to Five hundred Dol- t |
