IP The object of this device is to improve the construction r of felly connections of wheels, and provide a connection. adapted to be employed in wheels having either sawed or bent fellies. In the drawings, figure i is a side elevation of a portion of i a wheel having a felly connec-I connec-I tion embodying in part the in- vention, showing a sawed section sec-tion or felly with a spoke in the middle and a spoke and clip at each end, thus giving support and strength exactly where needed. One of the clips at the end is bent back to show the position while setting or re-setting the tire. Bent fellies require a clip at each joint and as many additional addi-tional clips as deemed necessa-ry necessa-ry to hold the tire in place and give additional strength to the wheel. Figure 2 is a longitudinal view. Figure 3 is a detail secttonal view. Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of an end of a spoke provided with the felly clip, showing the long pointed rivet, passing through the ears of the clip, which acts on the draw-bore principle and can easily be inserted through the lateral ears of. the clip. When forced into place, remove the long point with cutting pliers and rivet the end. Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of an end of a felly. Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. 1 designates a felly having its adjacent ends 2 oppositely grooved at 3, and fitted against each other and around a tenon 4 of spoke 5. The felly may be a bent one, or it may be con- structed of sawed sections, but in either case the joint will always occur at a spoke, and the adjacent ends of the sections will be constructed as shown, and if it be a bent one the construction is the same. The ends of the felly are supported and securely held against lateral movement by a clip 6, consisting of a plate having a central opening to receive the tenon 4, and opposite integral sides arranged on the side face of the felly and terminating at their ends in ears 7 which are connected by the rivet 8. The plate portion of the clip fits against the shoulder of the spoke and supports the ends of the felly, the rivet passes through the felly at the end of the spoke directly beneath the tire 9, By this arrangement it can be readily seen that the ends of each felly are secured as with an iron band, thus preventing them from antegral or lateral splitting, also sagging or breaking at the spoke, or the tire from coming off when it expands by heat. A wagon wheel constructed of bent fellies under our patent, with from 4 to 6, (or more), lateral clips will make as firm or durable a wheel as one with sawed fellies, and can be furnished for at least from 10 to 15 per cent less than the latter. Carriages, buggies and trotting gigs with wheels constructed of bent fellies and provided at each alternate spoke with ourpatent clip, nicely nickel plated, will produce a pleasing and satisfactory appearance. For many years the inventor has noticed a defect and impropriety in the construction of vehicle wheels, but never gave thought as to the best policy to obviate the difficulty, until recently, when his mind was drawn out upon this subject, and by dint of hard study and daep thought, fcrm-ing fcrm-ing devising and improvising, succeeded in perfecting the above illustrated and described improvement for which we have obtained U. S. Letters Patent known as Burgess & Smith's Improvement in Vehicle Wheels. We respectfully call the attention of manufacturers and dealers in Vehicles and all persons interested in the same, to our patented im-. provement, because wheels made under our patent are the best that can be manufactured, being 'the strongest on account of the patent clip holding hold-ing the Tellies in a substantial manner: and we would recommend to Manufacturers that they manufacture no others, Dealers to order no others and Purchasers to buy no other, vehicles than those with wheels constructed under Burgess & Smith's Patented improvement in Vehiclt Wheels, because they are the best, the strongest, most attractive, most reliable, and cannot be excelled. A die can be made to cut out these clips at a nominal expense. The Inventor will concede to wishes and terms that will make it interesting in-teresting and profitable to any one wagon and carriage manufacturing company that will take on the above business by granting rights and privileges under the patent that cannot fail to be of worth and prefit to the company. .
