Show PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. (Continued) I will now describe a Haiwaiian feast. Often on the completion of a new dwelling they must have a big one, lasting two or three days, or at least until the food is eaten; frequently frequent-ly killing a horse and they will never let up until every morsel of the animal is gone. By invitation I partook par-took of the following bounties at a feast held in a nice shady grove, where mother earth was used for a table, on which the viands were placed. Mats were spread on the ground for table-cloths. There were 300 plates, 300 bowls of Poi, 3 roasted hogs, 1 beef, ia turkeys and as many ducks. All these were dissected into small pieces before being placed on the table, if I may so call it, and besides all these luxuries lux-uries there were one hundred raw fish weighing from three to four pounds each, having just been taken from their watery home, 300 bowls of custard, 2 pumpkin pies, 100 loaves of bakers bread and an almost endless amount of buns and other sweetmeats. , ; When everything was ready, the guests took seats on mats spread on the ground around the food, dressed in their best. Many of the ladies wore their silk and satin gowns, while the men were dressed in white linen pants. . A more merry jolly and jovial crowd of human beings, I never witnessed; all enjoying their feast of fat things and during all this I did not see a knife, fork, spoon or anything else, except their fingers, used to eat with, and while eating they were talking and laughing all the time. They say they enjoy their food better and think it tends to health to have lively and pleasant conversation while eating. We elders, while mingling with and preaching to them, ate of their food, but instead of using our fingers ' as they did, we were always furnished knives, forks and spoons. H. W. B.
