Show Beaver. August 2, 1878. Editor Union. Politics seem to take a prominent position in Utah ; yet many do not Beem to understand the real issues. Some men (and women too) say they do not believe in mixing politics with religion. With this view, wheu will "God's Kingdom rule the world?" This is all very fine. It happens, however, in our Territory, that outside of religion there are no politics. If there is, what are the issues ? The two jreat national parties Democrats and Republicans, Re-publicans, with all their concomitants, join together in one political (?) party called ''Liberals." For what purpose do they thus unite? The answer is too obvious to need comment. It is answered in few words 'to put down the Mormon religion.' All outsiders join in one to keep the Latter Lat-ter Day Saints out of office and Gentiles in (to the puplic crib.) It is then a religious reli-gious issue. In Illinois it was "Old Citizens Citi-zens and Mormons. ' An outsider was . an old Citizen if he had staid over night in Hancock County. A "Mormon" was a Mormon or new Citizen as some termed us, if we owned real estate and had been in the country len years. It is only a rehash of the old type. Not only do all political Classesjoin to ostracise those who made the Country what it is, on religious grounds, but all religionists, no matter of what creed, like Herod and Pontius Pilate, join against the Saints, under guise of the 'liberal 'lib-eral party.'' But deliver us from such liberalism as they offer us. They are the moBt greedy set I ever saw When we consider what they already have and what they clamor for, wo are very forcibly reminded re-minded of tho djing miller, who, having three sons, caled them to his bedside to deter mine which shoald have the mill. On asking the first what toll he would take if the mill fell to him, he answered one-fourth. The old man shook his head and called number two. He would take one-third too little, couldn't live at it. Number three being called said; "My name boing McAlack, 1 will take the grist and swear to the sack." They have nearly got tho grist and now want the sack. They have the Governor with the one man veto power, Secretary, Land Ofiioo, Post Office, Surveyor, Marshal, Judges, I Commissioners, in fact every Office of profit in the Territory. What more do they want ? Simply the sack To accomplish accom-plish their end no subterfuge is too low or mean. In the late election here one "lib-eral" "lib-eral" candidate made two attempts at fraud, but he was detected both times. The "Mormon" religion is the issue with Liberals; the Public Crib the pap they - , desire to suck. What other issue is there? ? None; simply none. Then as religionists as well as Citizens, we should contest every ev-ery inch of ground ; for all we shall ever fee is what we maintain in every honora-le honora-le way. A Beaverite. |
