At Port-au Prince the government govern-ment works were entirely destroyed, !" . At Jacmel ihe high sea broke up and destroyed all small vessels at anchor and warehouses on the shore, while goods on the wharves were washed away including 500,000 pounds of logwood log-wood belonging to various owners. On the other side of tha town the rise in the river swept away several houses. A hurricane also destroyed the entire coffee and cocoa crops. Five vessels riding at anchor were driven ashore. At Aux Cayes in less than three hours 434 houses were destroyed; also a powder pow-der magazine, ihe court house and also other public buildings. A large number num-ber of persons were killed and wounded. At Aquin 186 houses were swept away and in Oavaillon, only four houses remain- Many lives are reported lost. The sea rushed over the town of St. IiOuis, and swept nearly everything away, burying men, women, and chil-, chil-, dren in its courset La Grande Anse was nearly .swept out of exislance, and at Jeremie only twenty houses remain and several vessels were driven ashore.
