Show A Word to the Wise, &c, As there will likely be a celebration of the 4th and 24th of July, we wish to remind the committeo on celebration celebra-tion of said events that thero is one item of great importance that should not be' overlooked. We have been connected with bands tor some years, so we speak by what we know. We consider that the musical talent of St George; gen erally, have been poorly dealt wi'h always being requested to piny bu never rrceiving as much as a copper for services rendered. I lvow, rf any of the community a large are requested to do a day's work they must have pay (or the same and why not pay the Bands! f,or their day's services? One Is as reasonable as the other, yet the latter is more so. for bandsmen have to spend weeks in practicing before they become proficient; profi-cient; and then, after spending s much time without "remuneration. ' surely they ought not be requested to play for your benefit without paying them for their services. A working animal must be fed and cared for, so bandsmen should be "remunerated," for in this counlry it is laborious enough to have to work for what we gel without being obdged to labor forever for-ever in a band capacity gratui'ously. Reason and Justice should prevail, and a "word to the wise" ought to be sufficient. p. |
