Show FARM NOTES. An acre of growing wheat uses CO tons of water a month. The wings of a flying bee vibrate more than 400 times in a second. It dees not pay to buy a cheap wagon wag-on unless one knows what is in it. Hay farmers, those owning their wn farms, should build one or more barracks to store their market hay. Clover and mixed hay should not be stacked, as the hay will not pack as close as either timothy or red top hay. In arid regions, where little soil water is present, humus decay Is so rapid that scarcely any can be detected detect-ed at any time. Humus laden soil has Its particles so held apart that a large surface is exposed for tha reception and holding of capillary water. The success of green manures depends de-pends more largely upon the rainfall during the period of growth than upon the character of soli. The less stagnant water there is In the soil the more rapid the decay, since water tends to shut out air which carried composition germs. The great loss and injury to market as well as the hay for the farm stock is in careless harvesting, cutting late1 and allowing the hay to get wet la the curing. ' With clover seed at $6 to $8 per bushel every farmer in the clover belt should seed every acre of land sown to small grain, not only next spring btu every spring. Alfalfa is a very uncertain seed crop, and it is a very difficult matter to estimate with any degree of certainty cer-tainty early In the growth of the crop what the yield of seed will be. The plowing and harrowing or disking disk-ing of the garden soil at this season will benefit it much in making it more friable for next spring's working, due to the disintegrating action of frosl through the winter. |
