J Q Allen of Mo Montrose trose Colar Cola Colo Colorado r rado do who spent a few days in Myton recently returned home full of good words for this great country He made the trip in the interest of a few r friends who arc are thinking of making investments investments investments in in- I vestments in land The Montrose Enterprise has this among other things to say of the visit of Dr Allen For many years the Uintah country has been an Indian reservation and from many other stand points is very much like the Uncompahgre Un valley even physically speaking only on a much larger larler scale the valley being being being be be- ing about 60 miles long and 40 miles fide It has its Spring Creek mesa its its its' Flat Plat Top and other peculiarities similar to this valley In In fact says Mr Allen it reminded me very much in many ways of the Uncompahgre gre valley The soil soil- is of the finest kind of red sandy loam and can be bought at present with a good water nigh for 25 an acre The principal drawback is the distance distance distance dis dis- dis- dis tance from the railroad being 85 miles from each direction While th the e soldiers have been removed and the reservation has been opened to settlement settlement settlement settle settle- ment the Indians are still there some of them still living out in their tepees There is an Indian school in full operation operation operation oper oper- on their reservation in charge of ofa I a well equipped doctor Mr Allen met a of graduates from the Indian college of Carlisle Pennsylvania but the Indians as a rule were slothful and nd little inclined to put forth much energy in their own behalf This country is on the direct line lint I of the Moffat railroad which has already 1 I reached as far as Steamboat Springs The people over there think that this road will be completed to Salt Lake city in time for the Panama exposition in San Francisco The minute this railroad goes through this country the theland theland land will wili jump from 25 to an acre is the opinion of Mr Allen Ill Nr ir Allen says t that at the railroad over Baxter pass is about the steepest t thing he has ha ever seen in a railroad The passenger trains are composed o of an engine and one coach and the freight engines are of the cog variety 1 Some of the grades are as high as seven seven seven sev sev- en per percent cent |
