Voters everywhere recognize that the ablest lawyers should be selected for judges regardless of politics. 2. JUDGE ELIAS HANSEN, candidate for as Justice of the Supreme Court, was born at Spanish Fork, Utah. For G years he served as our District Judge. During this time he established such a reputation for honesty, fairness, impartiality and judicial ability that he was nominated and elected to the Supreme Court, and he now holds the highest judicial honor in the state-th- at of Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court. Lawyers of both political parties say that he is one of the ablest jurists in the State. 3. M. B. POPE, candidate for District Judge, has been a sucessful practitioner of the law in the courts of this State for the past 20 years. He was our able District Attorney for 10 years. The lawyers of this Judicial District, recognizing his ability- elected him Commissioner of the Utah State Bar Association. The lawyers of this state then honored him by electing him President of this organization. 4. MILAN It. STRAW, candidate for District Judge, has had 20 years of experience trying cases in the courts of the state, in which he has been eminently successful. For several years he was the law partner of the late A. B. Morgan, lie also served as county attorney of Utah county, and city attorney of Springville several terms. In these public offices he made a splendid record. 5. Both these candidates for District Judge are well qualified for these positions. They are exceptionally well versed in the law. This is a who have to great advantage to the drawn-outhe t trials. A pay expenses of long, judge who knows the law can shorten trials by dispensing with controversy. Then, too, a judge who is master of the law, commits few errors and thereby reduces to the minimum the number of new trials and appeals. 6. Because of their years of experience in the trial of cases, these candidates have acquired a fund of good judgment, wisdom and common sense, which is an important qualification for a judge. 7. Honesty, both in private dealings and in public life, is an essential qualification of a just judge. These candidates possess this virtue in a degree. 8. Judging them by their records as public prosecutors- these men will be fearless, fair and impartial in their decisions. COMPARE the qualifications of these candidates with those on the other ticket and vote for the ablest men. 1. Gentry. Of late years Governor Blood has repealed the taxation of for construction and maintenance of state roads or purchase of rights of way and has also stopped the practice of calling upon the counties to advance funds to match federal aid In construction of state roads. This has imposed the entire burden of matching federal road funds and of maintaining state roads and of purchasing rights of way on the gas tax collections. Diversion of these moneys to the cities would cripple the state road program from being carried on In the county and would necessitate the property taxpayers here either making up the difference or would require shutting down part of the highway program being carried out. During the 15 year period mentioned more than $55,000,000 has been spent on state roads In the entire state. The counties have collected from the state road tax levies on property some $7,- 500.000 and have raised another from other sources. $9,178,000 The gasoline taxes have paid $22,- 700.000 and another sum amounting to upwards of $8,000,000 has come from state road bonds. The federal government has put up a total of $24,473,361. Only In the counties of Weber and Salt Lake have the state road expenditures been less than the amount of money collected from within those counties either in property taxes or gasoline taxs This excess collected from these two counties has been usd to finance the road program elsc-wh.r- e. Thus, it is pointed out, the diversion of gasoline tax moneys as advocated by some of the candi dates for public office would benefit these two counties at the expense of the balance of the state Furthermore their statement warns, under the federal law any diversions of gas tax money would result in reducing the amount of federal aid allocated to Utah.
