Show Congress Faces aces a Dual Responsibility J fly By RA RAYMOND lOND PITCAIRN National l Chairman Sentinels of 0 the Republic public As members of Congress reconvene reconvene recon recon- vene at Washington America is hearing many familiar promises of economy in government J Lets Let's ct's hope our legislators mean it this time Lets Let's hope they remember that the staggering debts piled plied up by government must be paid out ot or our earnings and our savings ins that what they hey do to the public budget affects our family budget as well Lets Let's hope that unlike New Year resolutions the promises will be ful ful- filled Its It's time they were For to today today to- to day as a no result of reckless spending by our federal state slate and local governments governments governments gov gov- a public debt of more than firt fifty billion dollars has been written up for us the workers and the earners camelS of the United States to pay Fifty billion dollars That's a lot lotof lotof lotof of money And It will take a lot of taxes to pay it oft off The Thc Interest and service charges alone cost us billions every year Its It's one of the reasons why five out of every twenty five dollars of the national income income- which means the money earned by bythe bythe bythe the American people people people-is is consumed by taxes And unless the economists are wrong a lot of the bills which these taxes are straining ning to meet w ill be hn h. h handed do wn as a in u en b legacy c t to our children al and d our grandchildren But you ou cant can't blame it all on Congress The politicians politician's penchant for squandering the peoples people's money has hns extended to states and cities and smaller units as well More Moie than twenty billions of our fifty fifty- dollar billion-dollar public debt is in fact charged against state and local governments ts We pay for that too too too-it if not di dir directly di- di r then in higher rents and in heavier bills for food clothing and other necessities all camouflaged as hidden taxes Only a a. large dose of the frequently frequently frequently fre fre- promised economy in hi government government government gov gov- can lighten the load Only an escape from the complex complex complex com com- plex of the past few years can help Today our Senators and Representatives Representatives Representatives at Washington can do their part Because of the Importance importance importance tance of the present session the eyes of the entire nation are arc upon them as never before If they keep their promises and apply the brakes instead of the accelerator to public spending they will not only case ease our burdens but will set an example for forstate forstate forstate state and local politicians to follow They face a double and a serious responsibility Lets Let's hope they meet it squarely squarely- not only with our own relief In mind but to assure the security and prosperity of America |
