Under the direction of the state extension leaders service, 107 from the various counties of Utah heard leading officials including Governor Henry H. Blood, President Elmer G. Peterson, Director William Peterson, T. H. Humph-erys- , state engineer; Professor George D. Clyde, irrigation engineer at the college, and others, point out the problems that are facing the future of western civilization due to the limited water supply for crops, homes, and livestock. We must learn to use our water supply more economically and said Governor Blood. judicially, It is wisdom to conserve every acre foot of water that can be ot saved. The very existence is of our communities Utah many dependent upon its water supply. Six means by which the water supply on the land could be increased were pointed out as follows Reconby Director Peterson; struction of rivers and streams to which canals are attached; mending of leaky canals; more economical irrigation practices; economic development and utilization of underground water; reservoir the flood waters and other waters for future use, and the transdiversion of streams. Director Peterson also outlined proposed plans for Utah to get her share of the Colorado river which would aid materially in increasing the water supply of this state. In order that all young men who are bona fide residents of the State of Utah and are ambitious and desirous of attending the Naval Academy may have an equal opportunity to receive an appointment, Senator King will conduct a competitive examination under the auspices of the United States Civil Service Commission. The competitive examination will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4, 1936, at 9:00 a. m., in Salt Lake City, Ogden, Logan, Provo, Richfield and Cedar City. No young man not taking Senator Kings competitive exathina-tioon Jan. 4, 1936, can be named as a candidate. The competitive examination for the Naval Academy includes the following subjects: Algebra, Geometry, English Composition and Literature, History and n Candidates are eligible for admittance to the Naval Academy if they are not less than 16 years of age on April 1st and not more than 20 years of age on March 31st of the calendar year in which they would enter the Academy. The practice pursued by Senator King in making appointments to the Naval Academy is to designate as principal the young man receiving the highest mark in the competitive examination; the man receiving the next highest mark will be designated as first alternate, the one receiving the third highest mark as second alternate, and the one receiving the fourth highest mark as third alternate. After designation by Senator King, a mental and physical examination will be given by the Naval Academy. The principal or alternates as chosen by Senator King, as a result of the may take the regular men tal entrance examination or they may submit high school certifi cates, and if the certificates are accepted and approved the can' didates will be required to take examination in substantiating English and Mathematics; or if the candidates have completed one year of college work they may submit their high school and college certificates, and if these are accepted by the Academy, the candidates will be exempt from the mental examination. Every candidate must of course submit himself to a complete and thorough physical examination. Senator King wall be very glad to have any young man from Utah who is a resident of the State, a citizen of the United States and within the age limits above re ferred to, take the examination for the Naval Academy. Authorization will be mailed to all those who have written Sen ator King asking permission to take the examination.
