Show OTHERS VIEWS TO THE SPORTSMEN IEN OF THE UINTAH BASIN BASINI I have been asked by a number of my friends to report the condi condi- conditionS conditions of game and the under understanding understanding standing with the Indian depart depart- department ment and the Indians As everyone knows I have had hac to fight the battle with the In In- Indians Indians almost single handed tryIng try try- ing to get the Indians and Breeds to live JIve up to the state game laws I have arrested a great many mans breeds and Indians Indians have have convict convict- co convicted ed a few and I have tried to do do this work in a fair way and have I I at last arrived at a very g good understanding with the Indians Indian and the Ule Indian Department I have worked up a very frie friendly friendly friend friend- d- d ly agreement in writing This agreement agreement a- a should have been In effect effect effect ef ef- twenty years ago Under this agreement the Indians will fish and hunt game the same as whites in n open season but the Indian will not be required to obtain a state license We have never been able to collect the license so we arc are not lot losing anything but are ore saving saving sav sav- ing ng the game and fish in closed season reason The Indians shall have control of f the tho beaver on Indian lands the fish and game department shall ball have control over tbt be beaver beav beAV- ver v- v er r not on Indian lands and under this his agreement neither party will issue any permits to trap beaver for or five years Beaver will be moved alive when doing loing damage and planted In mountain fish streams Beaver are re the fishermans fisherman's best friend They build their dams in in side aide streams or springs building natural natural na na- tural uraI ponds where the small fish are re protected from flood waters also from their cannibal parents It L Is a well known fact tact that fish eat at their spawn when short of food rod It Is the nature of trout to togo togo go 0 up stream to high water line I and they generally go Into small I streams to deposit their spawn I As the water recedes the fish drift back into the main maln streams During 1932 I have havo moved 77 71 beaver from the lower streams where they were doing damage to canals and ditches These beaver were released again in the upper mountain streams It will be only I a few years that beaver will be plentiful again Deer are on the increase and most hunters this year were satisfied satisfied satisfied sat sat- during the last open sea sea- son Fishing was good in hi most streams e especially high up The sage chicken in Altonah Home were plentiful and the sportsmen had a real treat After the first few shots are fired nim- nim rods roda has to use skill to get this bird But most hunters got as many as they wished to kill Tho The sage sago chickens are increasing Increasing- due mostly to the they government trappers trappers trappers trap trap- pers killing off the coyotes the tho coyotes being the worst enemy of V fJ the sage chicken We will wUl soon have lave a good start in the Uintah Basin if the fish and game department department depart depart- ment neat is successful in trapping tho the coyotes They are working on the he trapping at present and we have rave the promise the elk will be c turned lose on theA district dis- dis dis dis- n et Yours truly D.
