I SCHO SCHOOL L IS NOT A GRAFTING MACHINE l The purpose of this article Is la merely merey t to refute certain props props- propaganda ganda which is leading tax payers payers pay pay- ers era to look upon the school system system tem tern as some gre great t grafting unit which has been organized solely for the purpose of enriching the school board and all aU its employees It is is wen well that people get the facts in the case se before making public statements which maybe entirely misleading O One e charge has been made that the local school board was ask asked d last spring spring to reduce the tax levy in Duchesne county and that such reduction was not made ade Somebody Somebody Somebody Some Some- body should make further investigation investigation in 1 gation before giving out information information information tion like that ab above ve The levy 1 was reduced but o of c course urse it is 1 not sufficiently reduced to mee meet the demands o 0 who are arc of the type referred t to in the the the- first paragraph 1 Another statement to the effect effect- that a school board may Inay set an any Y I levy It chooses and the county commissioners are bound by law to I accept the same e. e The state stat law law has bas a limitation above which no sch school l board may go in placing I tax levies Still SUU another charge has has it that I teachers salaries were were n not t reduced ed cd after a certain committee met 1 with the Board and presented a resolution asking for such reduction reduction tion To this we must a answer I that salaries for teachers were re reduced reduced reduced re- re both this year and last in inthe inthe the Duchesne district Some people are attempting to blame the school board for the fact that taxes arent aren't being collected col collected col- col I col-I as rapidly as they should should be Such people should acquaint I themselves with the fact that I there is a world wide finan financial ial de de- de I existing at the present present time Taxes arent aren't being paid at ata a normal rate in any state in this j nation whether school levies are I high or low I The Duchesne School Board is well aware of the fact that every i consistent economy should be practiced in running the schools I I A careful Investigation along this I I I line will prove th that t the Board has been consistent Our county receives a great deal more money from the state for I school purposes than it pays in for such through taxes Thanks to I the passing of some of the state j I II I constitutional amendments amendments' According According Ac- Ac cording to present estimates this I I district will receive more money next spring as a result of the new I equalization law than any other I II district in Utah except two I II I I suggest that when some of our our j people begin feeling so badly over I I the taxes paid for school Purposes purposes pur pur- I poses that they stop and consider just why this this' money is spent The I I schools are for the children and andI it is for their welfare elfare that the I schools are in existence When I we attempt to hold a tax dollar doUar so close to our our- eyes that we canI cannot cannot can can- I not see the advantages our schools Of of today should have over those of of forty years ago it is time for forr r s serious rious reflection Your truly CHAS CRAS M M.
