Show o G. A. R. ENCAMPMENT. Thursday was quite a gala day for Salt Lake, tho occasion being tho arrival ar-rival of Corporal Tanno.', National Commander of tho G. A. R., and tho holding of tho Grand Encampment of tho G. A. R. of tho State. There wero many of tho old soldiers from all parts of tho state chiefly, however, how-ever, from Ogden, Park City, Eureka and Provo. In tho evening a banquet was given giv-en in Armory hall, after which speeches speech-es by Governor Cutler, Corporal Tanner Tan-ner and Judge C. C. Goodwin wero attentively at-tentively listened to by tho old boys In blue. Tho members of tho G. A. R. aro fast fading away. Corporal Tanner Tan-ner says they now number 240,000, but aro being reduced by death at tho rate of 6,000 a month. It is very pathetic path-etic to sco tho older men with bent forms and slow and tottering steps, but with enthusiasm and valor yet written on their faces. Nobody will over know tho magnitude of the debt not only this country, but tho wholo civilized world owes thom. May tho long bo spared amongst us and may their declining years bo radient and glorious as tho sotting sun. |
