Show Progressive Tribe. The annual school report of tho Cherokee nation records the establishment estab-lishment of seventy-ilvc now schools during tho past year, a fact which does not encourage the belief that tho Indian In-dian Is indifferent to advancement. Each native contributes to the support of these public schools, which are In no senso missions, but are maintained wholly by tho community. Tho teachers teach-ers are usually of Indian descent. The Cherokee tribe commands respect re-spect for its heroic waging of a contest con-test which for 200 years Involved its very existence. Driven from Its ancestral domain in Georgia to tho far west, It has built up a nation which Is intelligent, and which possesses many of tho noblest qualities. The constitutional government govern-ment has its headquarters at Tahle-gunh, Tahle-gunh, in a substantial capltol building. From the first tho trlbo gave ovl-denco ovl-denco of superiority. In tho early part of tho 18th century an embassy was sent from tho Cherokees to England. Tho chiefs, kneeling at tho feet of Georgo II. laid their offering, as an old chronicler states it, of "five eagles" tayles and four scalps of enemies, all of which his majesty was graciously pleased to accept of."
