Show TRIBUNE CONTEMPLATING A SUMMERSAULT. SUM-MERSAULT. i It Is becoming more apparent every i day that tho Tribune la becoming greatly alarmed over the probablo fate of tho "American" party in the fall W election. For a whilo after the present city administration went into office, tho flapping of Its wings as it expanded in self-adulation could bo heard for miles around. Dut this spirit lasted for only a few months, in fact only long enough for tho present administration, following tho banners of Easy Ez, tc show that it was humiliatingly incompetent, incom-petent, politically potty beyond do scription, and reckless of tho peoplo't right and the city's interests. Its at 4& tltudo now, after the jubilant pose of r few weeks ago, Is one sufficiently tear ful to excite the pity of the multitude. Half its ordinarily vitriolic space Is do-voted do-voted to a vapid defense of tho admin-istration, admin-istration, or to apologies for municipal misrule and extravagance which can no longer be disguised. In fact, with tho daily disclosures of "American" party misdeeds, the political atmosphere atmos-phere tho Tribune just now appears to be loaded with explosives, and it Is 9 naturally casting about for a chance to save Itself and its party from impending impend-ing wreck at tho coming election. A reprobate like tho Tribune would of course have no scruples in resorting resort-ing to any maneuver, however, dishonorable, dishon-orable, to avert defeat, and the story has come of lato from sources which can scarcely bo questioned, that unless tho "American" party prospects brighten bright-en perceptibly within tho next few weeks, it will make a change of front and become an out and out advocate of the election of the Democratic ticket. A condition which gives added ci-e-dence to this Is tho increasing virulences viru-lences of tho sheet toward the Republican' Republi-can' party, both nationally and locally. Having gone that far, and realizing the hopelessness of tho American party cause In tho county, it would bo tho easiest thing in the world for the Tribune Tri-bune at any moment to desert the political po-litical infant. There can bo no doubt that such a policy emanated from the distinguished editor of tho Tribune, and It is strongly believed that the contemplated con-templated coup is designed to help Senator Dubois in his pyrotechnic Idaho campaign, and indeed might! bo part of a plot to place Kearns, with Cannon ns his factotum, and Dubois in tho ascendency in Utali and Idaho by turning both states over to the Democracy. De-mocracy. If tho "Americans" are not careful, they are liable to wake up this fall, sans guidons, sans guy ropes and sans any visible means of support. . Another story In tho same connection and which is vouched for In sources apparently ap-parently reliable, is that tho Evening Telegram is to lose any Individuality it may now possess, and become the confessed evening edition or tho Tri- buno. By that move, Senator Kearns would save considerable In salaries, as tho managers of tho Telegram could be dispensed with and tho expenses incurred in-curred in tho attempt, which has proved to bo vain, to mako people believe be-lieve that tho Telegram was an institution insti-tution Independent of tho Tribune, would bo saved.. However the matter may terminate, it all goes to show that tho American party leaders are a jolly lot of rogues, and that they are becoming frightened of tho shadow thoy themselves have cast upon tho city. |
