PLAYS AND PLAYERS. j Wilton Lackayc had a narrow escape from probably serious injury at the Hotel Glcnwood, Riverside, Cal., when the elephants belonging to a circus stampeded as a result of a fire. One of the big beasts crashed into a window at which the actor was sitting, and although Mr. Lackaye was showered with broken glass he escaped j without injury. i Mrs. Lillic Langtry made her reappearance on the stage at the Haymarket theatre in London, on April 18. scoring a success 1 in a new play by Sidney Grundy, called "A Fearful Joy." The "Jersey Lilly" was supported by Allen Ainsworth and her daughter, Mrs. Lilly Grundy. A San Francisco paper announces that Maud Allen, the mysterious myster-ious dancer at the Palace theatre in London, who has taken the 4 theatre patrons of that city by stQrm, is none other than Maud SDurant, of San Francisco, sister of Theodore Durant, who hanged thirteen years ago for the murder of Blanch Lainont and Minnie Williams. Now that she has achieved success, it is said she has written friends in San Francisco, and thus her identity has been revealed to the public. Clyde Fitch is now busily engaged in the construction of a new play for Maxine Elliott, and prophesies that he will produce a play that will break the streak of hard luck that has followed the fair Maxine of late. Mrs. Grace Nelson Stensland, daughter-in-law of Paul O. Stens-land Stens-land of Chicago, who is now serving a term in Jolict for wrecking the Milwaukee Avenue State bank, is going on the stage as a grand opera star. She will be known as Grace Nelson on the stage, and will sing I the role of Salena in the opera "Mignon," which will be produced by the Chicago-English Grand Opera society in May. James P. Silver, assistant manager of the Silver Bros. Iron Works , Company, recently purchased a No. 5 Special, four-cylinder Buick from the Consolidated Wagon and Machine Company. This is one of ' the finest of the many fine machines turned out by the manufacturers j ' of this splendid car.
