Show Mines and Mining The only disquieting feature in the mining field during the week was the drop in the price of silver, which fell to the lowest point in several years. A drop of 18 cents per ounce from the highest point of 1907, which was 70 cents. No effect was experienced of a detri- mental character, however, with the exception of a weakness in silver stocks. Not one mine has been closed down nor has any work of development de-velopment been deterred. A move has been made on the part of the local mining exchange which will have a salutary effect upon stock dealing. This is to demand de-mand a monthly report from the managers of all listed mines as to their condition physically and to the financial standing of the companies com-panies operating them. With this carried out fully shady transactions will be minimized. The big merger of the Utah Copper with the Nevada Consolidated Consoli-dated and Cumberland Ely, of Ely, Nevada, has been another topic in mining circles. There seems but small reason to doubt but that this will be accomplished in the near future. The week has seen the resumption of work in all the camps of the state, and though mining cannot be said to be brisk, there is a general hopeful feeling abroad. The power which will operate the new Knight smelter in Tintic is nearly on the ground, and the blowing in of that plant will take place in the very near future. On the whole the week has been a profitable one, the upward tendency being noticeable all along the line. PARK CITY. The great Ontario Drain tunnel, upon whose operation so much depends in the camp, was reopened during the week. This means the resumption of operations not only in the Ontario mines, but in all the territory contiguous thereto. Drillis Scott has nearly completed the placing of his machinery on the Silver King ground and will begin operations during the coming week. The object of the work is to initiate the mine. The Daly-Judge is sending in its zinc ores to the zinc plant and development work in its mine is going on with somewhat of the old spirit. The shaft of the Little Chief mine is now down 1000 feet. The 1100 foot level will be reached before cross-cutting will be undertaken. BINGHAM. The Bingham Standard, made a shipment of gold, silver, lead, copper ore during the week, the rock averaging $50.00 per ton. This is the initial shipment. It is stated that the ore bodies arc developing finely and that shipments of high grade stuff will continue con-tinue indefinitely. q An increased tonnage from the big Bingham producers has gone to the reduction works during the week. The near opening of the U. S. Smelter has had a salutary effect on that property and it will soon again be on the active list. TINTIC. A force of fifteen men was at work on the South Swansea at Silver City during the week. The work for some time will be in the nature of repair work. It is from the Swansea that the Knight Smelter will drain its supply of water. A consolidation was effected during the week of the Copper Jade and Flying Dutchman companies. The consolidation controls forty claims, and development will be started at onCe. A body of fine quartz ore has been encountered on the 1000 level at the Emerald. It seems that at last the pluck of this company is to be rewarded. There is now no question but that there will be a resumption at the Lower Mammoth. The officials of the company so determined deter-mined during the week. I KIMBERLEY, MARYSVALE. Word comes up from Gold Hill that there have been splendid development at the Golden Treasure ground. , Manager Larscn began operations on the Log Cabin Group at Marysvale during the week. Frank Fulton and associates have another shipment of high grade ore in preparation for shipment. STOCKTON.. Another shipment from the Honorine lease was on the market during the week. TROPIC. The week saw great excitmcnt in Garfield County. A new district seven miles from Tropic was opened and gold rock assaying from $600 to $1200 per ton was opened up. The gold appears in the sandstone and the deposits arc said to be great. The country for miles is being staked out. ALTA. Steady work is going on in all the active properties in the district. No change has been reported during the week. , (Continued on Pago 14.) I MINES AND MINING (Continued from Pnec 5) OGDEN. J. I A contract was. let during the week for a tunnel on the Del Verde ground in Ogdcn Canyon. Work will be started at once. Wr f OUTSIDE MINES. The Giroux Consolidated of Ely, Nevada, resumed operations during the week. This was the mine where a disastrous cave-in of the shaft imprisoned several miners last year. Word reached Salt Lake during the week that the Harris lease at Seven Troughs in which so many local people arc interested has been fully financed and that work would be started at once. A big strike was reported during the week at the Whigo lease on the Thcrian company's ground. A large amount of high grade ore is being sacked. Eastern parties bought up all the treasury stock of the Independence Indepen-dence company of Gold Springs, Nevada, and work will be at once . started under the management of Charley Short. I The old property once operated by A. W. McCunc at Fay, Ncv- 1 1' j ada, is to be opened up. Eastern men left for the property during y the week. BEAVER COUNTY. The Telluridc Power plant has began active work, looking toward to-ward placing electric energy in the Beaver County mines. The week saw the beginning of the installation of power drills on the Indian Queen mine. These will very much accelerate the work of development. A shipment of high grade ore was made from the Progressive mine near the Moscow during the week. This is the initial shipment ship-ment from this property. The Hub and the Red Warrior in the same district arc also active. Work was started during the week on the Carbonate and Washington Wash-ington mines. The Estella Mill on the property of the Little Beaver Company's ground has been put in commission. The Savage, Little Beaver, Commonwealth and Rob Roy in the eastern end of the county are all active. The latter mine is on Indian Creek and it is said that a body of $50 ore has recently been opened up. The White Cliff of Indian Creek is responding finely to dcvel-A opmcnt. It will be a shipper during the season. "v In the Granite District the Oak Leaf and King of the Hills arc again active. TJic showing of copper is said to be fine. |
