Show i - i ii " ' iii !i Sporting Gossip i s Sponberg, the twirlcr who was with John Dubci's team last sca- v son, is now with the Aberdeen team in the Northwestern league, while ; Northrop, a former team-mate of Sponberg, is trying for a place on the Spokane team. i While the second annual bench show of the Utah Kennel Club 1 was not so well patronized as the show of a year ago, it was a suc- 1 cess in every way, the entries being greater in number than last year, and the management of the affair decidedly creditable to all interested. ' How the mighty have fallen. Hackenschmidt defeated by Frank Gotch, and in face of the declaration by the majority of the followers 1 of the game that the New Yorker hadn't a ghost of a show with the 1 Russian Lion. Gotch was none the worse for the encounter, while Hack looked as though he had been in a prize fight. Hack concedes the championship to Gotch and says he has no desire to again wrestle with him, as a return match would not win back the title he has lost. The Y. M. C. A. tennis courts will be open to the players on . April 15th. The association has three fine courts on Second South and Second East, where a number of interesting matches will be pulled off this summer. Rah for the Salt Lake sockcr football team. They took the Ogdcn boys into their camp on last Saturday, the score being 5 to 1. Twenty-five members of the recently organized Salt Lake Riding Club took a ride out west of town on Sunday, taking a bunch of grey--hounds along, giving a few jackrabbits on the flats the scare of their life. Rather reminds one of old times, this chasing rabbits with grey-( grey-( hounds. J The Y. M. C. A. will hold its second annual physical department exhibition in the Salt Lake Theatre on Wednesday evening, April 15th. Over 150 men and boys will take part in the exhibition, the biggest affair of the kind ever promoted in this city. Hardy Downing and Walter Demara write from California that the' will soon be back in Salt Lake and will take part in the races at the Salt Palace. Demara was the king of the amateurs here last season, , but will henceforth be in the ranks of the professionals. Downing and Demara were both popular riders last season. It seems to be settled that Roy Castleton will remain with Atlanta in the Southern league this season, giving him one more year's practice prac-tice before he settles down with the top-notchers in the base ball game. "Slats" Davis, who played first base for one of the best teams that Salt Lake has ever had, is to officiate as an umpire in the Western league this season, and says he has gone into training. His idea of getting into trim for the opening of the season is to hire some huskies to chase him about forty blocks, hurling cuss words and pebbles at him. "Slats" is a wise old gazabo, and will make good. Jimmy Gardner of Lowell, Mass., and Harry Lewis of Boston, both of whom claim the welterweight title, are to come together in a twelve round bout in Boston on April 14th, to settle that little dispute, dis-pute, and. of course, to annex a few dollars. "Honey" Melody will probably be matched to meet the winner for the legitimate title. They evidently like the game of football over in Scotland. At Glasgow the other day 100,000 people attended the game between the England and Scotland teams, and there was rare doin's, a number of heads being cracked and everybody having a good time. The game was a draw, each team scoring one goal. The local bike riders arc getting down to genuine training now, so as to be in shape for the opening races. Some of the boys are doing road work, others are sticking to the track, but the whole bunch be- gins to realize that the man who is in condition at the opening of the season is going to cop out the coin in the first races, hence there is very little idleness with the scorching brigade. Walker's field having beci leased by a couple of gentlemen who promise to supply the fans with a first class article of base ball this season, it begins to look as though the troubles of the aforesaid fans, , who have been on the anxious seat for some time, are about over. Of l course they can't expect the same brand of ball that is doped out to the ' cities in the National or American leagues, but it's a pretty safe bet that I they will be given their money's worth. It will beat nothing at all. , And it would not be at all surprising if we should be furnished with a pretty race this season. Games arc to be played on Saturdays and ) Sundays, with teams representing Salt Lake and Ogdcn, and probably other towns will be represented. If not, there is Murray and Fort , Douglas clamoring for recognition in the national game. Cheer up, ' boys, you will have plenty of chances to yell yourselves hoarse at the ball grounds this summer. "Sandy" McFarlane has been selected as manager and A. Gunn captain of the Lagoon base ball team, which will play independent ball this season. The team is largely made up of the Dubci team of last season and contains some pretty fast players. The boys declare they I will meet all comers at Lagoon or any other place outside of Salt Lake. It's too bad this bunch is not in the league with the Ogden and Salt H Lake players, and it is to be hoped that they may be induced to come H in with the other fellows. H Silverskin, the English setter, which won second prize in the H novice class at the Utah Kennel show, has been sold by Bransford and H Kcefe to the Gladstone kennels. It is said a fancy price was paid H for the dog. H Foxy Dad Gimlin of Ogdcn has been busy of late, and now comes H the announcement that he is to have a baseball park within four blocks H of the center of the town and that he already has sufficient material for H a first-class team assembled at the Junction City. With the ball park H located so close to the business district, Gim figures that the attend- H ancc will be at least doubled, and he is figuring on his team making a H little easy money this season. You can always count on that town H backing Gimlin to the limit when it comes to baseball, so look out H for a fast team from Ogdcn this season.
