Show H GOOD ROADS. H Good country roads are the ,best advertisement any locality can possibly have. We have traveled over roads in different counties that H! have been .so. smooth and well kept that anyone would know at once that'ta thrifty class of citizens inhabited the neighborhood. On the li otherhand one may pass over roads that arc so terribly rough and carelessly kept, or not kept at all, that it is self evident the people residing in the locality possess no enterprise or "get up." Someone may suggest that good roads are expensive to keep in condition and the traveling public more than the local people get the chief benefit. Yet the latter pay the toll. This view is wrong, the traveling public may get a good share of the direct benefit, but event. ually the people of the district realize and derive the real profit. We form our opinions of people to a very great extent from their surroundings. If .you go to a place, no matter for what purpose, and you endure hardships and much inconvenience getting there, you are m more or less depressed when you reach your destination and it requires H cffort and .inducement to convince you that that particular place is H perfectly right. But if you arrive having had a pleasant and enjoy-H enjoy-H ab!e. tnP over well kept roads, you are in much better humor and M spirits and the chances are you will transact your business in a much H more satisfactory manner to all concerned. B Good roads are a standing advertisement to any community. If a party are contemplating a pleasure trip by bicycle, automobile, horse, carriage or afoot the first question is "how are the roads?" and no matter what other inducements are offered, the locality having the best roads wins the party. On returning from a town one of the chief descriptiqns of the trip always is "the roads there and there were splendid, but they j$ were intolerably bad here and here." Docs that kind of advertising pay? Yes, big dividends in innumerable innum-erable ways. By all means let us have good county roads. |
