Show AN ENTERPRISING SALESMAN. I On the tenth anniversary of his wedding, a merchant in Wash- I ington was approached by a book agent who offered for inspection H a varied assortment of books, particularly dwelling on the beauty and H value of a new edition of the Bible. He said : H "I have been told that this is your wedding anniversary, and you H could make no better present to your wife than a family Bible; and H this splendid edition which sells for $15 at retail, I am now able to H offer you for $10, spot cash." H He made the sale, giving a beautiful imitation morocco case, H which he claimed was genuine. Then he hastened to the home of the H merchant, and using the same arguments, induced the wife to buy H another edition of the family Bible as an appropriate wedding present H for her husband. H When they exchanged presents that evening, there was quite a H commotion in the home, and the husband was beside himself with H rage, forgetting that both of those Bibles contained the injunction: H "Let not the sun go down upon thy wrath." Being unable to go H downtown, he telephoned a friend to go to the station, and bring that H book agent to the house, without fail. The friend has.tened to the H depot, caught the book agent, delivered the message, and insisted H upon the agent delaying his departure. The wily fellow, full of busi- H ncss, replied: H "I offered him a copy of this Bible for $10, and he put it off for H the time. I am very sure that he has repented and wants a copy as a H wedding present for his wife. He has undoubtedly told her of the H bargain, and she wants it. I cannot remain over, however, for one sale, but you can take it to him, and he will be delighted, and will for- H ever thank you for having overtaken me. The price is only $10, and H you had better take it to him, as his wife is probably crazy to get it." The friend paid the $10 and took the Bible home to his anxious H friend; and, what then happened and what was said, would not be H proper to print. H |
