Show VETOES prohibition ammu BILL MEASURE ADOPTED BY UTAH legislature NOT APPROVED BY GOVERNOR SPRY executive declares members of L were pledged to submit question of statewide state wide prohibition to the voters salt lake city Co governor vernor william Wil linin spry has vetoed the statewide state wide prohibition hibi bIbI tion bill which would have placed utah in the dry column on oil july 1 I governor Oo vernor spry on thursday march 18 filed senate bill no 50 60 known as the wootton bill with the secretary of state with a letter of disapproval which under the constitution of utah amounts to a veto tho the governor stated that no member was pledged to enact a prohibition law but that such pledges as were given were to tho the effect that the question should be submitted to a vote of the tha people of the state the message also sets forth that there la is on oil the statutes of the state at the present time a local option law which makes it possible for communities to bo be dry it if the residents desire in addition tho the legislature just adjourned passed a bill which was signed by the governor which prohibits the shipment ot of intoxicating liquors into dry territory thereby strengthening the prohibition in those sections which have acted favorably under the local option law in commenting on the bill the governor said raid that the bill was waa hedged about by a support that turned a deat deal bar ear to those who would have amended it to meet various objections among whom was the afie governor who urged that provision be made tor for compensation to those whose property would be rendered valueless ile he declares that he urged the legislators isla tors to incorporate such a clause and 11 alling therein ein had requested that the time at which the bill would have become effective be extended the legislators also turned a deaf ear to this request lie ile also said that he be believes tho the people of tho the state have a right to express themselves on the question not through representation that has promised one thing and provides another I 1 ills his concluding objection is that tho the bill abolishes the saloon and makes the druggist tho the dispenser or of alcohol and wine on the physicians perc tion with the generous allowance of a maximum of one quart of liquor under each prescription |
